Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
