‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Light therapy is clearly enjoying a moment. There are now available light-emitting tools targeting issues like complexion problems and aging signs along with muscle pain and oral inflammation, recently introduced is an oral care tool enhanced with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. Based on supporter testimonials, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

The Science and Skepticism

“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a Durham University professor, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Certainly, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Daylight-simulating devices are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Types of Light Therapy

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, finding the right frequency is key. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and suppresses swelling,” explains Dr Bernard Ho. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “typically have shallower penetration.”

Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight

The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”

Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps

Colored light diodes, he says, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red light devices, some suggest, enhance blood flow, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

Simultaneously, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that many assumed was biologically inert.”

The advantage it possessed, however, was its efficient water penetration, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. These organelles generate cellular energy, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” notes the researcher, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”

Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – autophagy representing cellular waste disposal.
